OXXON CASE STUDY

Oxxon Pharmaccines, a biotechnology company based in Oxford, England, was about to open a US Office in Boston, MA, and to change its name to Oxxon Therapeutics. Oxxon wished to make its presence known in Boston—an area commonly flooded with daily biotechnology news-- in order to facilitate the development and commercialization of its products in the US.

Anita Harris Communications  joined The Communications Strategy Group Inc. of Marblehead, MA and DeFacto Communications, of London, to develop and execute a highly coordinated rollout plan to announce the Oxxon news. The effort included personal introductions to highly placed biotechnology, government and industry leaders and a cocktail reception at the British consulate. CSGI handled the introductions and reception, DeFacto wrote a press release, and Anita Harris orchestrated outreach to the press,  suggesting to  business and biotechnology reporters that they use Oxxon's move as an example of "insourcing," in which international companies hire US workers to work on US soil.

As a result of the team's personal outreach and cocktail reception, Oxxon is now well-positioned to conduct business in the United States. The company is currently recruiting staff and developing relationships with potential partners; it plans to begin reaching out to US-based investment bankers and venture capitalists in the near future.

As a result of our media outreach efforts, Oxxon’s new office and name change were covered by at least 50 print, radio and Internet outlets locally, in the US and internationally. In Boston, Oxxon’s CEO was interviewed by the widely read Boston Business Journal and Mass High Tech publications, as well as by three local radio stations. She was also interviewed on Marketplace, a production of National Public Radio; and on The World—a co-production of Public Radio International and the British Broadcasting Service. Each of those broadcasts is heard in hundreds of communities in the US. Voice of America subsequently promoted the Marketplace production in an international press release and broadcast it worldwide. The Oxxon announcement was also covered by important industry publications including BioWorld Today and BioCentury and by at least 35 Internet sites concerned with biotechnology news.
